Pod: Planet of Death – Compatibility & Testing Notes
The game has been tested in two environments: DOSBox Pure and PCem. This page documents how the game behaves in each environment and explains the MMX‑related Dolby Surround feature.
DOSBox Pure
- The game runs correctly when using 3dfx software mode, although performance is not fully smooth.
- When using 3dfx hardware mode, the game becomes excessively fast and shows HUD artifacts.
- MMX is not implemented in DOSBox Pure, which prevents enabling the Dolby Surround option.
PCem
- PCem fully supports both MMX and 3dfx, allowing the game to run and sound as intended.
- During installation, the Full Installation with MMX Support option must be selected to enable MMX‑dependent features such as Dolby Surround.
Dolby Surround Technical Note
According to information referenced from Wikipedia, POD (1997) supported Dolby Surround only on CPUs with Intel’s MMX instruction set. Ubisoft relied on MMX’s SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) capabilities to perform real‑time audio mixing and surround decoding efficiently. Systems without MMX lacked the required vector instructions, so Dolby Surround was disabled on those processors.
